Implementing Your Diversity & Inclusion Initiatives at the Top of the Funnel

At Entelo, we firmly believe diversity is the true foundation of all great companies. We also believe there is much more technology can do to help organizations build this foundation. That’s why we spent countless hours interviewing recruiters, picking the brains of industry leaders, and facilitating discussion panels to understand the biggest D&I challenges facing talent organizations. These conversations helped us to better identify the obstacles keeping recruiting teams from reaching their D&I goals and ultimately develop new functionality to solve for these pain points.

Today we are excited to announce four new additions to Entelo’s diversity toolkit: Diverse Pipeline Reports, Diversity Highlights, Inclusive Language Insights, and Peer-Based Skills.

The Business Case for Diversity and Inclusion

This week, I had the opportunity to kick off the HCI Inclusive Diversity event in San Francisco with some opening remarks outlining the business case for Diversity & Inclusion. Why the business case? At an event like this, the general HR practitioners in attendance already know that D&I is the right thing to do. Many also know there is a legal case for it as well. But how do you convince a group of senior level executives that you need resources to produce a successful D&I program at your organization? That’s where the business case becomes necessary. What follows is a breakdown of the business case for D&I, complete with the relevant stats to help you make an airtight argument for a program like this at your own organization.

Why We’ve Moved Beyond Culture Fit (and You Should, Too)

There’s a common phrase in recruiting that now makes me shudder when I hear it. The phrase in question? Culture fit. “What’s so wrong with culture fit?” you ask.

Culture fit has become code for “do I get along with this person,” which, in turn, often really means "is he or she like me?" That’s a problem because we shouldn’t base hiring decisions on how much we like people or want to hang out with them. Choosing colleagues is not like choosing friends-- nor should it be. And that’s one reason the idea of culture fit can be so problematic.

Last Week in Talent - June 20, 2017

Hello friends!

This is Last Week in Talent, where yours truly runs down all the most interesting, important and intriguing talent and recruiting-related information from the last week in recruiting and hiring.

In case you missed it, Entelo (yes, us!) announced our Series C round last week (ps, we're hiring), Amazon announced they are buying Whole Foods (for the estimated equivalent of 3.7 billion bottles of Kumbucha), Careerbuilder just got bought, Wordpress is closing their super nice SF (office because no one actually uses it), McDonalds is using Snapchat to recruit, Facebook is teaching machines to negotiate with humans, Slack is raising a $500M megaround and Culture Amp announced that they had raised a $20M Series C.

Embrace Talent Diversity in Your Sourcing Strategy

It's no secret that many companies struggle to nurture and promote diversity. As we see time and time again, diversity and its advancement are goals without easy solutions. Rather than be turned off by complexity and difficulty, companies and recruiters must approach diversity like they would any other issue, with determination, curiosity, and creativity. That’s what we’ve done here at Entelo, which is why diversity is one of our core tenets and its advancement is behind one of our flagship products.

Beyond the moral and ethical reasons, there are business considerations for why every company ought to make diversity a priority. Countless studies have shown that diversity initiatives improve morale, corporate culture, employee retention and recruitment, all of which increase a company’s competitive advantage.

Women in Leadership Share Challenges of Workforce Diversity, Pillars of Success

Being a woman in the workforce lends itself to unique challenges. While many companies support gender diversity, workplace equality remains an initiative yearning for action.

So often the picture painted for working women isn’t favorable. We’re 15% less likely than men to be promoted, earn less than men for same roles, and continue to be professionally underrepresented, holding under 30% of roles in senior management. Evidently, at the current pace, it’ll take longer than a century before there’s gender equality in the C-suite.

If you’re like me, reading through that might have been mentally exhausting. Good news about women in the workforce can be few and far between. That’s discouraging, especially in the midst of groups taking action on diversity and inclusion, like Project Include, Catalyst, Code2040, Lean In, and Paradigm, just to name a few.

In light of this, we’re drawing the attention back to the power of potential, and narratives of growth. Entelo’s Reflect, Grow, Empower will share lessons on being bold and resilient, as told by women leaders in tech. Leading up to our panel, we spoke with speakers Linqia’s Maria Sipka, Floodgate’s Ann Miura-Ko, and Decker Communications’ Hilary Davis to learn more about their pillars of inspiration, success, and hustle.

How to Scale Diversity Hiring at Your Organization

As we’ve seen in recent years, even the most well-meaning or well-funded attempts to improve diversity numbers can come up against a brick wall and wind up with little to show for it. Many companies struggle to turn intent into results, and many of the world’s foremost organizations have acknowledged that fact. Yet many others still insist that they are too busy for diversity initiatives.

During his appearance on Hiring On All Cylinders last month, Pandora’s Marvin Stickel chatted about his successes and challenges implementing a sourcing diversity program at Google. After experiencing considerable success on his team, they took a step back to look at Google’s overall numbers and realized they had not actually made a dent, percentage wise. As Stickel explains, it was a deflating moment. Despite their success at a team level, translating that success to a company-wide initiative remained elusive.

Diversity is a competitive advantage. Yet many of the companies that genuinely tried to build a diverse company miss their goal. It all begs the question, can hiring candidates with diverse backgrounds be achieved at scale? And if so, how can more organizations achieve true diversity?

The answer, of course, is yes. Here's how.
