If your hiring managers know exactly what they want, assess candidates accurately at first glance, sometimes agree to meet with people just to humor you, and have a reasonable amount of must-haves, then congratulations, you can stop reading now.

For the other 99% of you, getting on the same page as hiring managers isn't always a tiptoe through the tulips. It can be inaccurate and overly dismissive to scoff at a candidate without speaking to them, and lists of must-haves often get so lengthy as to bleed into nice-to-haves. Recently, friend of Entelo and Director of Global Talent at SumoLogic, Zack Isaacson, joined us to discuss his recent experiences growing his organization from it's early co-founders to over 260 top professionals. Among the myriad topics we covered were dealing with hiring managers and how to position yourself alongside them to have the best chance of success. We discussed:

  • Instances where it makes sense to reach out to candidates your hiring managers initially dismiss
  • Editing job descriptions to make them as relevant to the eventual talent as possible
  • Gradually learning more and more technical details about open roles so as to speak your candidates' language
  • Learning as much from bad-fit candidates and as good-fit candidates
