Advanced Filters: 3 Powerful Ways to Turbocharge Your Search

December 17, 2012 at 1:45 PM by Jon Bischke

filters2We just rolled out a new feature on Entelo that we're pretty excited about. It's a very powerful way to quickly locate very high-quality candidates in certain areas. We're referring to it as "Advanced Filters" and in this blog post we'll show you how to use it.

The feature is based on the belief that there are metrics on various social sites that are indicative of how skilled a candidate is. They're not perfectly correlated with quality but we've found a high degree of positive correlation. Some examples of these metrics include:

  • The number of followers someone has on Github
  • The number of followers someone has on Dribbble
  • The reputation score someone has on Stack Exchange sites

For the first time that we're aware of anywhere on the web, you can now filter your search results on Entelo by these metrics. Let's see this in action.

Screen Shot 2012-12-17 at 9.17.07 PMTo see the advanced search filters in actions, first run a search on Entelo. Here's a search for "Javascript" in San Francisco which returns 26,963 results. That's a lot of candidates to go through!

Now let's say you want to quickly filter down to candidates that seem more highly-skilled or experienced. This is where the advanced search filters come in. So let's pretend you're looking for that rare "unicorn", the talented designer who can also write really solid front-end code. A great way to find that person is to look for people who have profiles on both Github and Dribbble. Using the "Social profiles" filter on Entelo (see the image above) you can restrict results on Entelo to only people that have profiles on those sites. In this case that gets you down to 705 candidates. Now we're getting somewhere!

But that's still quite a few people to sift through so let's say you believe that folks that have at least a few followers on a service like Github or Dribbble are more likely to be highly-skilled. Well now with Entelo you can filter the results even further. So let's say that you want to see only candidates that show up for a "Javascript" search and have at least 3 followers on Github and 3 followers on Dribbble.

Here's how that looks. Just to re-cap, this is going to give you only candidates who show up for Javascript in the San Francisco Bay Area and who have 3 or more followers on Github and 3 or more followers on Dribbble. Should be a pretty select group of people!

So what happens when we re-run that search? 191 candidates. That's a manageable list for most recruiters to work through. And based on a cursory spin through the results, it's a pretty talented list of folks. We've been using this feature internally for a while and we've been pretty impressed by how quickly this allows us to locate the right types of people for certain roles. It's an extremely powerful and intuitive way to search Entelo and we're excited to bring it you.

We have a lot more in store for 2013 and looking back at where we were a year ago, it's amazing to have come this far in such a short amount of time. Thanks for your feedback so far on the product and please keep it rolling in. We're looking forward to building you an even more powerful search tools in the months to come!
