WFH? Here's How to Remove Distractions and Actually WORK from Home

Ah, the delight of working from home. The 10-second telecommute. The sweatpants. The Netflix. Screen_Shot_2014-05-29_at_1.02.26_PM

Wait. Stop. Netflix? Yes, I'm guilty of it too. It's easy to get distracted and lose precious productivity hours when you're relaxing at your own place, but if you want to actually work from home, and not risk losing your company's lenient policy, there's a few simple steps you can take to remove distractions and get stuff done.

Rise and Shine!

I know, the temptation to WFB is very real. But think about how you're positioned in bed. A relaxed posture, a dim room, surrounded by pillows and blankets. Safe to say you're probably not at your most alert. Get out of bed, put some clothes on, and work at a desk or somewhere else where you can focus and remove yourself from the relaxed mentality that probably creeps in when you're at home. Even though it's not technically WFH, getting out of your living space and hitting a coffee shop is a great way to change the scenery, wake up, and start alertedly flying through tasks.

 

Remove Distractions

Like I said, don't give in to the myriad distractions that are in your home. Your bed or television are right there, but they're only going to slow you down. Again, if this is too much to ask, consider heading out the door and going around the block so you can WFCS. Also, if you have roommates, a significant other, or children, let them know that you're not taking a day off, so to treat you as they would during a normal work day and only bother you for something truly important.

 

Set Concrete Tasks

Rather than just resorting to standard work-related housekeeping tasks like cleaning up your inbox or responding to dozens of emails, think about slightly larger projects you can work on. I've had luck segmenting my day into 30 minute or hour long sessions and merely trying to get as far with one task as I can in that timeframe. Productivity and task tracking tools like Asana are great for prioritizing and getting a high level view of all the stuff on your plate.
